14-Plate Igaboshi Helmet with Sabiji Finish Leather O-yoroi (Large Armor) with Two Boy Servants of the Acala Painted on Tsurubashiri [the Edo Period]
Many suits of armor from the Edo Period were made with every luxury as symbols indicating the owner families’ pride and status. Accordingly, O-yoroi (large armor), an old type made originally from the 9th to the 12th century, became popular once again. For the 14-Plate Igaboshi Helmet with Sabiji Finish, deer skin has been used lavishly, and pictures of the Acala and cherry blossoms have been painted on the leather. In addition, delicate chasing and lacquerware decoration have been performed on the metal parts, while a large swallowtail crest is found on the upstanding part on the front. This is a very luxurious helmet.
